Learning about being an Entrepreneur

We’ve had the pleasure of working with students and staff in offering support on several unique projects, workshops, and field trips here at our Makerspace. While we enjoy helping those bring their designs and creations to life, we also have guidance for those who are curious about entrepreneurship and what starting a business entails.

Gibran Carter, our Strategic Innovations Facilitator, runs a workshop for students with the goal of understanding what an entrepreneur is and how it could possibly benefit those who are interested in that area. Students are first tasked with distinguishing the difference between a product and service. Products are generally tangible objects that are made to be sold or consumed, whereas services are providing acts or ways of helping others with a specific activity. They also learn about influential entrepreneurs who are the creators of some popular products/services, such as Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft.

In this workshop, students are given the chance to design a mockup and present their own product or service to their class as if they were pitching the idea to a group of investors. Their work includes creating a name, price, where it is available, choosing a target audience, and the benefits of their creation. A few ideas these students thought of were a pet supply store, specialized magnetic gloves for sports, and a paint shop that would service the community in commercial or personal projects.

Our goal is that students leave this workshop with a better understanding of the principles of what entrepreneurship is and how their creativity could be used in different formats to run a business. If you had the ability to be your own boss and have your own business, what would you create?
